Nebosh International General Certificate is a first entry level qualification in the professional field of occupational health and safety, offered by Nebosh (National examination board in occupational safety and health), a UK based awarding body.
One of the finest qualification in the field of HSE, but popularly termed as “a difficult nut to crack”. The pass percent is around 45%, it is even lower if passing at a time, in both units (IG 1&IG 2) are taken into consideration.
The moot question is how to pass Nebosh IGC, since I have 32 years of experience in Industrial HSE field and a distinction holder in Nebosh IGC; I have some sure shot technic to give you. If you follow these guidelines, then certainly you will succeed.
The following are the few tips:
- Read the Nebosh IGC book designed by the institution, since it is written by expert, whose story is available on our website. It is written in simple, easy to understand language, having features like TOPIC FOCUS, PREVIOUS YEAR QUESTIONS ETC.
- Make notes from Topic focus and keep on revising and memorizing.
- While attending classes online/offline, students should visualize the topics being taught and imagine as if they are working as safety officer in a general industrial set up. This helps students to understand workplace parameters and dynamism.
- Nebosh on its website has clearly mentioned the hours of book study apart from hours of class attendance. Let me clarify. Suppose you are attending regular classes and understanding the topics being taught, you will get 50% of pass marks, for rest 50%, you have to go for self-study through book given by the institute.
- For those students who are working professionals, I have a piece of advice. They should prepare snippets notes and keep handy with them. Whenever, the get time, revise it. Keep revising the topic till you are fully familiar with it.
- Notes should be prepared directly from our book’s Topic Focus.
- Students should not fall prey to touts, who promise them to pass, but fail to do so, with huge amount of money lost.
- Now, let us understand OBE (open book examination), Nebosh offers OBE testing pattern. In this pattern, you will be given username and password and a timeframe (24hrs.on the particular date). You have to open your computer (laptop/desktop), at given time and date. After you sign in on Nebosh website, you will be prompted to an interface having a question paper and an answer sheets. Read questions and write on the sheets and upload it. Remember uploading must be done within 24 hrs. of sign in.
- Now let us focus on types of questions that are being asked by Nebosh. Before questions, a scenario will be given, read three times and underline important events and useful data, because questions are directly set on this information. In case of doubts, you can refer to books given by institution or notes made during class room interactions. You should not go for online search because it will kill your time and invite malpractices.
- So you now have to understand Nebosh malpractices rules. Nebosh says following three activities will invite malpractices charges:
- Plagiarism
- Collusion
- Impersonation
What is Plagiarism?
Plagiarism is when you copy and paste from websites. You can escape these charges if you quote the URL but this is not of any help to you because questions are practical in nature, hence online materials are of no use.
What is Collusion?
When you along with few other examinees sit together and copy each other’s, this looks like not one person’s submission but group submission, you are charged of collusion.
What is Impersonation?
When somebody writes examination for you, it is called impersonation.
What is the action by Nebosh? You will be referred in that particular unit or debarred from seating in further examination.
